Drunken driving case involving U.P. police official dismissed

Sault Ste. Marie — A drunken driving case against a state police post commander in Michigan's Upper Peninsula has been dismissed.

WLUC-TV reports a Chippewa County judge on Wednesday threw out the case against Lt. William Smith following an evidentiary hearing. Smith was arrested in July by police in Sault Ste. Marie for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated following a traffic crash involving a personal vehicle.

The case was dismissed after the judge decided that a test of Smith's blood-alcohol level couldn't be used as evidence in the case. Prosecutors said they were disappointed by the decision.

The department says marijuana was growing along trails, and holes were dug along the trails that held water. Small campsites were found, as well as fertilizer bags.

Authorities are seeking tips in the ongoing investigation.

FBI investigates Elder, Mullin

Former Wayne Co. officials targeted in corruption probe

Detroit — The FBI is investigating former Deputy Wayne County Executive Azzam Elder for corruption, along with ex-Detroit Metropolitan Airport CEO Turkia Mullin, according to a search warrant obtained Tuesday by The Detroit News that for the first time reveals a focus of a wide-ranging federal probe.

A search warrant affidavit unsealed Tuesday sought permission to search the Rochester Hills home of former Wayne County official Tahir Kazmi on Feb. 9. Kazmi, the county's former chief information officer, pleaded guilty last month to accepting $70,000 in bribes from a contractor and is cooperating with the FBI probe.

"Wow," said Wayne County Commissioner Bernard Parker, D-Detroit. "Most people have always thought it was those two or (Wayne County Executive Robert) Ficano or all three, so I'm not surprised. But it's the first time someone confirmed it. Everyone has just been waiting for it to happen."

Feds add money laundering to charges against ex-Ficano aide Grundy

Detroit — A grand jury filed seven new charges against Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano's fired political lieutenant Wednesday, the latest allegations in a widening corruption probe of county government.

The new indictment adds more pressure on Michael Grundy, an assistant executive who months ago was seen as a rising star in Ficano's administration. The charges — one count of conspiracy to launder money and six counts of laundering money — involve Grundy's close friend Keith Griffin, who pleaded guilty to his role in the corruption probe in May and agreed to cooperate with investigators.

"It's no secret my client has agreed to be truthful, and I think he's been very truthful and forthcoming," Griffin lawyer Leon Weiss said. "Everybody has to face their own set of consequences."

Ex-candidate for Congress charged with lying to FBI

Detroit— A congressional candidate lied to federal agents and tapped an Albanian loan shark to bankroll his failed campaign against U.S. Rep. John Conyers, according to court records.

The allegations against Westland businessman John Goci were unsealed Wednesday in a complaint charging him with lying to agents, a five-year felony.

The charge stems from an FBI investigation into Tomo Duhanaj, the owner of Bray's Hamburgers, in Westland.

Goci, wearing a yellow T-shirt, jeans and leg chains, was released on $10,000 unsecured bond Wednesday following arraignment in federal court. Goci, 42, was ordered not to talk about the case with Duhanaj or any other co-conspirators.

Ex-roommate: Allen Park slayings suspect said 'he'd cut her up'

Allen Park — For years, Roger Bowling contemplated killing his former girlfriend, cutting up her body and dumping it in the Detroit River, an old roommate claimed Monday.

Robert Slick, 35, who said he has known Bowling since he was a first-grader, said the two had at least 10 conversations while they lived together around 2004 — while drinking beer and smoking marijuana — about how they would "get rid of" the women in their lives.

Slick, who was bitter over a divorce at the time, said Bowling detailed how he would handle his ex-girlfriend, Danielle Greenway.

"He said that he'd cut her up, put her body in a cooler with chains and ratchet straps around it and dump her body in the river," Slick testified during the second day of Bowling's preliminary examination in 24th District Court in Allen Park. The hearing resumes Aug. 29.
