Maintenance crew finds body parts in Sterling Heights sewer line

Sterling Heights — The daily routine of a crew of contractors hired to clean a Macomb County sewer line was rocked Wednesday when they discovered at least a dozen body parts on a platform 50 feet below the ground.

The two-person crew with Inland Waters Pollution Control this week had been inside a section of the Oakland Macomb Interceptor sewage line at 15 Mile, just east of Maple Lane, doing maintenance work. When they wrapped up work on Tuesday, all was clear.

But about 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, they found mixed in with debris what appeared to be 10 to 15 skin fragments the size of softballs on the steel staging platform, said Gene Schabath, community liaison for the Oakland-Macomb Interceptor Drainage District.
