Detroit man, 62, fatally shot protecting grandchildren

Detroit— Police are on the lookout for five men in the fatal shooting of a decorated veteran trying to protect his grandchildren during a robbery.

The victim has been identified as John Villneff, 60, a veteran of both the United States Marines and the Navy, and a recipient of the Purple Heart.

According to the Detroit Police Department, the incident occurred at about 11 p.m. in the 6800 block of Rutland Street, on the city's west side.
