Lawyer: Beatty got $140K after resignation; jurors in Kilpatrick case will be anonymous

Detroit— Christine Beatty, the former chief of staff and mistress of Kwame Kilpatrick, pocketed $140,000 from the mayor's campaign fund or personal charity after resigning in early 2008 amid the text-message scandal, a lawyer said Monday.

A lawyer for former Detroit water boss Victor Mercado dropped the bombshell Monday while emphasizing the benefits enjoyed by Kilpatrick insiders and insisting Mercado was not a member of the mayor's inner circle. The statement was given on the day U.S. District Judge Nancy Edmunds heard several defense requests to limit evidence during next month's City Hall corruption trial.
